Choreography is the art or practice of designing sequences of movements of physical bodies (or their depictions) in which motion or form or both are specified. Choreography may also refer to the design itself. A choreographer is one who creates choreographies by practising the art of choreography, a process known as choreographing. It most commonly refers to dance choreography.[1]

The word choreography literally means "dance-writing"[2] from the Greek words "χορεία" (circular dance, see choreia) and "γραφή" (writing). It first appeared in the American English dictionary in the 1950s,[3] and "choreographer" was first used as a credit for George Balanchine in the Broadway show On Your Toes in 1936.[4] Before this, stage credits and movie credits used phrases such as "ensembles staged by",[5] "dances staged by",[6] or simply "dances by" to denote the choreographer.[4]

The ballet master or choreographer during this time became the "arranger of dance as a theatrical art", with one well-known master being of the late 18th century being Jean-Georges Noverre, with others following and developing techniques for specific types of dance, including Gasparo Angiolini, Jean Dauberval, Charles Didelot, and Salvatore Viganò. Ballet eventually developed its own vocabulary in the 19th century, and romantic ballet choreographers included Carlo Blasis, August Bournonville, Jules Perrot and Marius Petipa.[2]

Modern dance brought a new, more naturalistic style of choreography, including by Russian choreographer Michel Fokine (1880-1942)[2] and Isadora Duncan (1878-1927),[7] and since then styles have varied between realistic representation and abstraction. Merce Cunningham, George Balanchine, and Sir Frederick Ashton were all influential choreographers of classical or abstract dance, but Balanchine and Ashton, along with Martha Graham, Leonide Massine, Jerome Robbins and others also created representational works.[2] Isadora Duncan loved natural movement and improvisation. The work of Alvin Ailey (1931-1989), an African-American dancer, choreographer, and activist, spanned many styles of dance, including ballet, jazz, modern dance, and theatre.[7]

The position of assistant choreographer will be available for all "graded" productions (those available for Rehearsal and Performance credit) in the Hoerner, Clark, and McCarroll theatres. In some cases, a choreographer or director/choreographer may choose not to utilize an assistant, or to utilize more than one assistant, and have the final say on how they engage and utilize these positions.

Applications must be submitted electronically as pdfs via email to the chair of the Department of Theatre Arts and artistic associate, who will distribute copies of those who meet the criteria to the appropriate individual director(s) and/or choreographer(s). Individual director(s) or choreographer(s) may request an interview with any, all, or none of the applicants. The director(s) and/or choreographer(s) will then forward to the chair the name or names of the students they would consider for this assignment. The chair of the department, in consultation with the individual director(s) and/or choreographer(s), the director of artistic programming, and the performance faculty, will make the final assignments and notify all applicants as soon as the selection process is complete.

Many colleges and universities offer degrees and concentrations in dance and performance, but none offer a degree in aerial choreography. Broadway aerial choreographers typically start out with several years of acrobat, aerial, gymnastics, and dance training. From there, aerialists and dancers can assist or be mentored by a professional aerial choreographer to understand what it is to choreograph movement in the air. Those starting out may want to strengthen their skills by taking workshops, classes, or trainings in their region.

The Young Choreographer's Series offers student choreographed, designed, stage-managed, and publicized studio dance productions. YCS productions take place in the New Dance Theatre. Several YCS pieces have been selected to be on the program of the UGA Concert Dance Company Fine Arts Showcase, the department's Senior Exit Concert, and some have gone on to distinguish themselves in adjudication at festivals of the American College Dance Festival Association and by joining the repertoires of regional dance companies. Each year a YCS choreographer or dancer is awarded a scholarship for summer study at any of the premier summer dance workshops.

All performers and choreographers participating in YCS must be enrolled in a DANC dance technique class during the semester they are rehearsing. Choreographers in YCS must be dance majors or minors. Stage One is an informal concert in the Fall semester to showcase student choreography. Other opportunities for performances in the UGA and Athens community are included. YCS, in conjunction with the Department of Dance, produces the senior choreography projects in the New Dance Theatre.
